68 Year Old Delhi Woman Donates Kidney Gives Two a New Lease on Life

New Delhi, 25th February 2025: On the morning of 17th February 2025, a 68-year-old woman suffered a seizure attack followed by rapid loss of consciousness. Her family immediately rushed her to HCMCT Manipal Hospital, Dwarka where an urgent CT scan confirmed massive brain hemorrhage. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she was declared brain dead on 20th February 2025.

Her 72-year-old husband, along with the family, took the courageous decision to donate her organs. After his consent, both the kidneys and corneas were donated. Other organs were found unfit for transplantation. Her kidneys were allocated through NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization). One kidney was transplanted into a 51-year-old female at HCMCT Manipal Hospital Dwarka, while the other kidney was transplanted in a 40-year-old male at another city hospital. Mrs. Verma’s corneas were donated to Niramaya Eye Bank.

Dr. Shrikanth Srinivasan,Chairman, Manipal Institute of Critical Care Medicine, HCMCT Manipal Hospital, Dwarka said, “After initial stabilization of her condition including ventilatory support, CT scan revealed that she had suffered from a massive brain hemorrhage. Despite intensive treatment under the care of the Neurosurgery and Critical Care teams, she could not recover and was declared brain dead on 20th February 2025 at 05:32 pm.”

Dr. (Col) Avnish Seth VSM, Chairman, Institute of Gastroenterology & Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Sciences, NCR Cluster and Head Manipal Organ Sharing & Transplant (MOST) said, “Organ donation is a powerful act of kindness and an often-ignored aspect of End of Life Care. Dr. Anurag Saxena, Cluster Head of Neurosurgery, along with the Critical Care team, took the effort to explain the concept of brain death with a beating heart to the family. The family’s decision has helped save lives and given renewed hope to others.”

There is a wide gap between patients who need transplants and the organs that are available in India. 1.8 lakh people suffer from kidney failure every year, however, only 13,426 kidney transplants were performed in 2023. An estimated 25,000 to 30,000 liver transplants are needed annually in India, but only 4491 were performed in 2023. Similarly, out of several thousand people suffering from heart failure, only 221 received a heart transplant. In the case of corneas, about 25,000 transplants are performed annually against a requirement of 1 lakh.

The noble act of organ donation highlights the pressing need for organ donations in India, as there is a significant disparity between patients awaiting transplants and the availability of organs. Increasing awareness and participation in organ donation can bridge this gap and offer hope to countless lives in need.

Dr. Venki Ramakrishnan Wealth Impacts Longevity at ABP Ideas of India 2025

Mumbai, 25, February 2025: “One stark reality is that wealth plays a role in longevity as rich people tend to live 10 to 15 years longer than the poor,” said Dr. (Prof.) Venki Ramakrishnan at ABP Network’s Ideas of India 2025 while speaking in the session “The Science of Ageing- The Yearning for Immortality”.

Highlighting the uniqueness of human awareness of mortality, Dr. (Prof.) Venki Ramakrishnan remarked, “Death itself is a peculiar phenomenon, millions of our cells are dying even as we sit here. We have a natural limit to our lifespan, with the longest recorded being 122 years by Jeanne Calment. No one has lived beyond 120. While the number of centenarians, those over 100, has been increasing, the number of supercentenarians (above 110) has remained stagnant. Aging is essentially the accumulation of changes and damage that lead to increased dysfunction over time.”

Discussing the biological hallmarks of aging, Dr. (Prof.) Venki Ramakrishnan remarked, “There are key hallmarks of aging, including changes to our DNA and the proteins associated with it, as well as cells becoming dysfunctional. Aging occurs at every level, and in many countries, the proportion of older people is rising while fertility rates are declining. There has been an explosion in longevity research with credible and dubious claims.”

Citing a key experiment, he highlighted, “As we age, some cells enter a senescent stage where they no longer divide. In one experiment, an old rat was connected to a young rat, and researchers found that the older rat benefited from the young rat’s blood, while the younger one suffered.”

Dr. (Prof.) Venki Ramakrishnan further remarked, “The general idea is that as we grow older, our ability to produce certain compounds declines. For example, NAD precursors decrease by about 30-40% in older individuals. Reprogramming cells and regenerating stem cells are among the many approaches being explored to slow down aging.”

Addressing the socio-economic aspect of aging, Dr. (Prof.) Venki Ramakrishnan noted, “We now understand why exercise, a good sleep cycle, and other healthy habits help slow aging. Avoiding social isolation and maintaining a sense of purpose is crucial. Early health screenings, such as for diabetes, can make a significant difference in ageing.”

ABP Network’s Ideas of India 2025, centred around the theme ‘Humanity’s Next Frontier’, will bring together thought leaders and innovators to explore the challenges and opportunities presented by India’s rise in a rapidly changing world. In the face of climate change, geopolitical conflicts, and technological advancements such as AI, the summit delved into India’s role as both an ancient civilisation and a demographic powerhouse in shaping the future. The two-day summit gathers a confluence of ideas from global thought leaders, intellectuals, and change makers, covering transformative possibilities in science, medicine, social contracts, and global leadership, with experts from diverse fields offering bold visions for a better, more sustainable world for all.

Care for your colon

Dr. M P Madhu, Consultant – Medical Gastroenterology, Aster RV Hospital

Ever wondered how digestion happens in the body? The food we eat transverse through four tubes – the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine and finally through the large intestine which is also called the colon. A colonoscopy is a test to diagnose the problems of the large intestine.

When do you need a colonoscopy?

  1. If you have altered bowel habits.
  2. Loose stools not improving even after four weeks of treatment.
  3. If you find blood in stools.
  4. Recent onset of constipation.
  5. If you have low haemoglobin.
  6. If you have recurrent pain in the abdomen.
  7. If you notice significant weight loss – and suspect colon cancer.
  8. Screening colonoscopy of normal individuals – if a family member has colon cancer.
  9. Suspected intestinal diseases like tuberculosis, Crohn’s disease and IBS – Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

At what level of haemoglobin is colonoscopy required?

  9. Suspected intestinal diseases like tuberculosis, Crohn’s disease and IBS – Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

At what level of haemoglobin is colonoscopy required?

Normally men should have hemoglobin of 13gm and women, 11gm. Any level below that needs to be evaluated. We do see patients just taking iron tablets or iron injections for low haemoglobin and not getting tested. They are found to have colon cancers at a later date. So it is always better to get a colonoscopy done before taking iron tablets.

Generally, people have the perception that it’s a painful procedure. But that’s not the case. With the availability of advanced colonoscopes, improving skills and the use of CO2 (carbon dioxide) instead of air during the procedure – it can be performed with minimal discomfort. Conscious sedation also makes the procedure more comfortable. General anaesthesia is usually not required for colonoscopy.

We see the whole of the large intestine and a small portion of the small intestine called the terminal ileum during the procedure. Procedure time varies from 15 to 30 minutes depending on the complexity of the large intestine. We may see an ulcer, a polyp – small extra growth, a tumour – larger extra growth and a haemorrhoid (piles). Later, we take a biopsy from an ulcer or polyp. Small polyps are also removed during the procedure and sent for examination by a pathologist.

What is a biopsy and why is it done?

A biopsy is a medical procedure where a part of tissue is removed and sent for examination under a microscope. It is done to diagnose infection, inflammation, cancer and type of polyp.

What happens after colonoscopy?

We tell individuals to use restrooms to pass out the gas and stool. If a procedure is done under sedation – an individual is observed in the hospital for two hours. Then one can have normal food.

Follow-ups

The doctor will call you after four-five days if any biopsy is taken and any polyp is removed during the procedure.

Gyan Museum Jaipur Hosts Andrew Horsfall’s Art on Societal Contradictions

New York, NY. February 25, 2025. The Gyan Museum, a cultural space housing the private collection of the late Gyan Chand Ji Dhaddha (1940–2004), has opened an exclusive exhibition showcasing the work of renowned British sculptor and artist Andrew Horsfall. Dedicated to preserving artistic heritage and creative expression, the museum highlights the evolution of Horsfall’s work across various mediums. Running through May 30, 2025, at the Gyan Museum’s Jaipur location, the exhibition is housed in the Gyan Museum’s 750 sq. ft. exhibition gallery offering an immersion into the depth and innovation of Horsfall’s sculptural and digital artistry.

“The exhibition celebrates 25 years of Andrew Horsfall’s artistic journey, showcasing his profound mastery in bronze and sandstone. His acclaimed works, including the ‘Beggar Series’ and ‘Bone Heads,’ delve into themes of victimization, egoism, and self-righteousness, sparking reflection and discourse,” says Arun Dhaddha, Director of the Gyan Museum. “We are also presenting the ‘Break the Glass’ series, an exclusive collection crafted from gems, diamonds, gold, and platinum, inspired by Andrew’s experience as a father of seven and reflecting the challenges faced by today’s youth. Additionally, the exhibition highlights Andrew’s latest explorations in digital portraits and 3D-sculpted blue pottery masks, marking his ongoing evolution as an artist.”

Nestled in the heart of Rajasthan, the Gyan Museum is a tribute to the late Gyan Chand Ji Dhaddha (1940–2004), a visionary collector, gemologist, and naturalist whose lifelong passion for antiquities and artefacts led to the creation of one of the most unique and important private museums in India. Housing over 2,500 treasured pieces spanning more than 3,000 years of history, the museum is a gateway to the past, offering a space where knowledge meets artistry. In this spirit, the exhibition of Andrew Horsfall’s work aligns with the museum’s commitment to preserving and presenting creative mastery. Having long engaged with Rajasthan’s rich traditions, Horsfall relocated his workspace to Jaipur in 2020, allowing him to expand his creative boundaries and explore new dimensions with unparalleled depth.

Horsfall’s artistic practice is deeply rooted in his lifelong dedication to sculpture and drawing, with a profound connection to the materials he works with. His relocation to Jaipur has allowed him to embrace new inspiration, pushing the boundaries of both traditional and contemporary artistic mediums. The Andrew Horsfall exhibition at the Gyan Museum delves into the complexities of human experience, societal constructs, and the contradictions of survival. The artist explores themes of resilience, exploitation, overprotection, and identity through a thought-provoking lens. A deconstructed cross, “Metamorphic Crux” reassembles its components in a fragmented manner. The piece invites viewers to reflect on the evolving nature of belief, how it shifts through history, and how personal experiences reshape spiritual meaning. “Gloria” emerges as a figure navigating a world left in ruins by human excess. Cast in bronze, the piece speaks to resilience and the enduring hope that persists despite devastation. A poetic reflection on nature’s relentless push toward growth, “Eggo Seed” embodies the struggle for survival. Referencing Darwinian competition, the piece portrays natural selection of the fittest reaching for sunlight. In a compelling trilogy—Ego is Hunger, Money Monster, and Beggar 3—the “Beggar Series” dissects the ethics of giving and receiving. These bronze sculptures expose the duality of begging, where survival, manipulation, and systemic exploitation intertwine. “Ego is Hunger” embodies the contradiction of value through suffering. The figure acknowledges its role as both victim and instrument, gaining worth through the misfortune that defines it. A grotesque yet essential entity, the “Money Monster” thrives on others’ despair but simultaneously provides them sustenance.

“Working with Arun and the Gyan Museum has been truly inspiring,” says Andrew Horsfall. “The keen sense of curation, meticulous attention to detail, and thoughtfully designed contemporary gallery has made the collaboration seamless. Their passion for presenting art in new and meaningful ways makes the experience both rewarding and enriching.”

A critique of modern parenting, Horsfall’s “Break the Glass to Play” examines how overprotection alters childhood. Presented in bronze, silver, gold, and precious stones, this seven-piece series encases traditional childhood play within rigid materials, representing the constraints imposed by an over-cautious society. Each piece, named—Autocrat, Predator, Mental Health, Sexual Harassment, Rebellion, Obesity, and Narcissism—explores different aspects of how restriction and sheltering shape adulthood. The work encourages dialogue on the balance between safety and experiential learning. In a contemporary reinvention of Jaipur’s iconic blue pottery, Horsfall’s 19-piece series of Masks preserves individual faces in an ancient medium, capturing the essence of identity and impermanence. Using 3D scanning technology, the portraits blend traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques, offering a new perspective on how personal histories can be memorialized. Masks can also be commissioned in bronze or carved from precious stones, such as Moss Agate, emphasizing the intersection of heritage, nature, and innovation.

“Curating Andrew Horsfall’s artistic odyssey was a deeply fulfilling endeavor. I collaborated closely with Andrew and the gallery director, gathering their input on the story they wanted to convey through this celebration of 25 years of his work,” says Curator Nikita Sharma. “Together, we shaped an exhibition that seamlessly blends his bronze and sandstone sculptures with his digital explorations, including 3D-scanned faces and blue pottery masks. My focus was to present his journey in a cohesive and engaging way, ensuring every piece resonated with his vision and the audience alike.”
