MEIL Director & Billionaire Philanthropist Sudha Reddy Champions Indian Craftsmanship At The 2026 Met Gala In Manish Malhotra Couture
New York, May 6: Global philanthropist and business leader Sudha Reddy marked her return to the iconic Met Gala red carpet for the third time, representing Hyderabad on one of the world’s most prestigious fashion stages.
Reddy wore a custom couture creation by Manish Malhotra titled ‘Tree of Life’, a masterpiece of textile craftsmanship that placed Indian heritage and storytelling at its core. While complemented by her personal jewellery collection, the ensemble stood out for its deep-rooted celebration of traditional Indian artistry.
Requiring over 3,400 man-hours and crafted by a team of 90 master artisans, the outfit underscored Reddy’s continued commitment to preserving and promoting India’s artisanal legacy on a global platform.
Aligned with the 2026 Met Gala theme, “Fashion Is Art,” the ensemble drew inspiration from the ancient Kalamkari textile tradition of Machilipatnam—an art form with a legacy spanning over 3,000 years. Styled by renowned Hollywood stylist Mariel Haenn, the look incorporated intricate techniques such as zardozi, marodi, resham embroidery, and metalwork.
The design featured symbolic South Indian motifs including the Palapitta, Jammi Chettu, and Tangedu flowers, alongside celestial elements like Surya and Chandra, and the Kalpavriksha—reflecting Reddy’s cultural roots and heritage.
Speaking on the occasion, Sudha Reddy said,
“Hyderabad is my foundation, and this ensemble translates that cultural identity into a language that feels both global and deeply personal. Indian craftsmanship is not confined to history—it is a living art form capable of shaping the global fashion dialogue. New York was our starting point.”
Designer Manish Malhotra added,
“Fashion has always been about emotion and storytelling. With ‘The Tree of Life,’ we wanted to create something that carries memory and the soul of craftsmanship—it is not merely worn, it is experienced.”
Stylist Mariel Haenn shared,
“Our goal was to push the boundaries of red-carpet fashion by presenting this ensemble as a piece of high-concept art, projecting Indian heritage through a contemporary, cinematic lens.”
A Director at Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) and Chairperson of the Sudha Reddy Foundation, Sudha Reddy continues to champion social impact initiatives across healthcare, women’s empowerment, and community development. Her global presence extends beyond the Met Gala to prestigious platforms including the Cannes Film Festival, Paris Haute Couture Week, and the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Through this appearance, Reddy once again positioned Indian craftsmanship at the forefront of global fashion, reinforcing its relevance, richness, and enduring legacy on the international stage.
