Chandigarh, July 1: Vedanta Chairman, Anil Agarwal recently shared an experience from the early days of his entrepreneurial journey, revealing that one of his biggest leadership lessons came after losing an important business deal. He said the incident taught him the true importance of delegation, entrusting responsibilities to the right people and having confidence in them.
Sharing his story on social media, Agarwal recalled that in his early years, he tried to handle every aspect of the business himself, considering himself a “one-man army.” His mornings were spent meeting buyers, afternoons with suppliers, and evenings dealing with banks. At the time, he believed that doing everything personally was the only path to success, regardless of the time and effort it required.
However, one day, an important business deal slipped away simply because a crucial form was not submitted on time. The incident deeply affected him and made him realise that although he was working tirelessly, his way of working was not sustainable or effective.
Following this setback, Agarwal hired his first clerk to take over certain responsibilities, allowing him to use his time more effectively and focus on areas where he could create greater value.
Concluding his message, Agarwal shared a leadership principle that has guided him ever since:
“Every leader should ask themselves one question: What is the value of one hour of my time? If someone else can do that work, hire them and spend your time where it creates the greatest value, in achieving bigger dreams.” Through this experience, he emphasised that successful leadership is not just about working hard, but about trusting capable people and learning to delegate effectively.
