Kolkata, Sep 9: India has taken a major step towards strengthening its ocean research and maritime capabilities with the launch of Sagar Manthan, an advanced indigenous Ocean Research Vessel designed and built in the country.
Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) for the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), the vessel has been developed under the Deep Ocean Mission at an estimated cost of around Rs 840 crore. It is designed as an all-weather research platform capable of operating in challenging ocean conditions, including the Southern Ocean.
The launch is significant not only for scientific research but also for India’s growing maritime and blue economy ambitions. A stronger ability to study the ocean can help the country better understand marine resources, climate patterns, seabed conditions and environmental changes while reducing dependence on foreign research platforms.
Sagar Manthan will support a wide range of activities, including deep-sea surveys, seismic and geophysical studies, seabed sampling, atmospheric observations and oceanographic measurements. The vessel will also be equipped to deploy remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles for specialised underwater operations.
One of the important areas of research will be the Indian Ocean’s mid-ocean ridges, including surveys related to multi-metal hydrothermal sulphide mineralisation. Such research can improve India’s understanding of seabed resources and contribute to future planning around marine resource management and deep-ocean technologies.
The vessel is also expected to support research linked to climate change, disaster preparedness and environmental protection. Better ocean data can help scientists improve understanding of weather and marine conditions, strengthen tsunami and disaster-related studies and support more informed decisions on the sustainable use of ocean resources.
The project also highlights the growing capabilities of India’s domestic shipbuilding industry. Developing a specialised research vessel within the country creates opportunities for Indian engineering companies, equipment manufacturers, technology providers and skilled professionals involved in ship design, marine electronics, underwater systems and scientific equipment.
Sagar Manthan is expected to have a service life of around 30 years, providing India with a long-term platform for oceanographic research and training. Its advanced systems include dynamic positioning, multibeam bathymetry, seismic equipment, sub-bottom profiling and weather observation systems.
The vessel will gradually help replace the ageing ORV Sagar Kanya, which was acquired from Germany in 1983. The transition from an imported research platform to an indigenous vessel represents an important step in building domestic expertise in specialised maritime technology.
For India’s economy, the wider opportunity lies in developing the blue economy, which includes marine research, fisheries, offshore resources, maritime services, technology and related industries. Better scientific knowledge of the oceans can support responsible resource development and create opportunities for innovation and investment.
The launch also strengthens Kolkata’s position as an important centre for shipbuilding and specialised maritime engineering. The successful construction of such a sophisticated vessel can help build confidence in India’s ability to develop more advanced ships for scientific, commercial and strategic applications.
Sagar Manthan will undergo further construction, system integration and sea trials before its planned delivery to NCPOR and the Ministry of Earth Sciences in 2028.
The project therefore goes beyond the launch of a new research vessel. It represents a broader effort to build Indian technology, scientific capability and maritime expertise, while using ocean research to support climate resilience, resource knowledge, innovation and the long-term growth of India’s blue economy.
