New Delhi, 26 September 2026: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Friday attended the auspicious Indrajatra celebration organized by the Sikkim Newar Guthi at Manan Kendra, along with members of the Newar community.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister highlighted the cultural and social significance of Indrajatra, describing it as not merely a religious festival but a celebration of the rich culture, traditions and identity of the Newar community. He said the festival’s message of faith, respect and togetherness holds deep relevance for Sikkim’s diverse and harmonious society.
Chief Minister Tamang acknowledged the invaluable contribution of the Newar community to the history and development of Sikkim, noting its contributions across administration, agriculture, trade, public service, sports, art and culture.
Referring to the community’s historic contributions, including the Taksari tradition and achievements in public service, sports and mountaineering, the Chief Minister expressed his respect and gratitude for the proud chapters the Newar community has added to Sikkim’s history.
The Chief Minister also reiterated the State Government’s commitment to the long-standing demand for the inclusion of the remaining 12 communities in the Scheduled Tribe list. He stated that the ethnographic study has been completed and the report has moved forward, with the State Government and Legislative Assembly extending their support to the matter.
Emphasising that the issue should rise above political considerations, Shri Tamang stated that it is a matter concerning the people of Sikkim and called for collective efforts beyond political differences.
The Chief Minister further stressed that Sikkim’s greatest strength lies in its unity in diversity. He cautioned against communal politics, rumours and divisive forces, underscoring the importance of preserving the State’s social harmony and collective identity.
Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister offered prayers to Lord Ganesha, Kumari Devi, Lord Bhimsen and Lord Bhairava on the auspicious occasion of Indrajatra. He also participated in the traditional Rath Yatra, a significant highlight of the celebrations, alongside distinguished members of the Newar community.
The Chief Minister acknowledged the occasion as an important expression of the Newar community’s rich cultural heritage, age-old traditions, and enduring identity, and conveyed his appreciation for the community’s continued efforts towards preserving and promoting its cultural legacy with pride and devotion.
