Thiruvananthapuram, August 17: Kerala is set to enter a new phase of maritime growth as the Vizhinjam International Seaport begins full-scale export-import operations from August 18. The development is expected to strengthen the state’s links with international markets and create fresh opportunities in trade, logistics, investment and tourism.

The first export container will be flagged off at a ceremony on Tuesday, marking an important step in Vizhinjam’s transition from a transhipment hub into a major commercial gateway.
The port’s growing role is expected to benefit several sectors beyond shipping. Increased cargo movement could create demand for transportation, warehousing, logistics, manufacturing and other supporting services, while better connectivity may provide exporters with new opportunities to reach international markets.
The Kerala government will also launch Mission Samudra, a port-led development initiative aimed at building a wider economic ecosystem around Vizhinjam. The plan includes industrial clusters, new urban centres and improved connectivity, supported by a Rs 400-crore catalytic fund.
For local businesses and communities, the expansion could bring opportunities in areas such as hospitality, transport, food services, retail and tourism. As port activity increases, these sectors could see greater demand and generate new employment opportunities.
Vizhinjam’s location also adds to its tourism potential. The port is close to some of southern Kerala’s well-known attractions, including Kovalam Beach, Lighthouse Beach and the coastal areas around Vizhinjam. Visitors to the region can combine the coastal experience with trips to Thiruvananthapuram’s cultural and heritage sites.
The development could also encourage more investment in hotels, restaurants, travel services and other tourism-related businesses. At the same time, responsible planning will be important to protect the coastal environment and ensure that development benefits nearby communities.
For Kerala, the significance of Vizhinjam goes beyond the arrival and departure of ships. The port can become a centre around which new businesses, infrastructure and services develop.
With full-scale EXIM operations beginning, Vizhinjam is opening a new chapter for Kerala—one that connects global trade with local businesses, employment, investment and the state’s growing tourism economy.
