New Delhi, Aug 11: India has reached a major milestone in its clean-energy journey, with installed non-fossil fuel-based power capacity crossing 300 GW, strengthening the country’s progress towards its long-term energy transition goals.
As of July 31, 2026, India's non-fossil power capacity stood at 300.50 GW, taking the country beyond 60 per cent of its target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030.
The milestone reflects the rapid expansion of renewable energy across the country, with solar power emerging as the largest contributor. India now has 164.59 GW of solar capacity, while wind power accounts for 58.14 GW. Large and small hydropower together contribute around 57.24 GW, with bio-power and nuclear energy adding further capacity.
The growth marks a significant change in India's power landscape. Clean energy is increasingly becoming an important part of the country's efforts to meet rising electricity demand while strengthening energy security and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
The expansion is also creating opportunities across the wider green economy. Renewable-energy manufacturing, battery storage, transmission infrastructure, electric mobility and other clean-technology sectors are gaining importance as India's power system becomes more diversified.
For consumers and businesses, a larger non-fossil power base can support the country's growing electricity needs while creating the foundation for cleaner economic growth. The transition is also expected to generate new opportunities for investment, manufacturing, skilled employment and innovation.
At the same time, the rapid growth of solar and wind power brings new requirements for the electricity grid. Strong transmission networks, energy-storage systems and improved grid management will be essential to ensure that renewable electricity can be supplied reliably despite variations in weather and generation.
India now has to add roughly another 200 GW of non-fossil capacity to reach its 500-GW target by 2030. The latest achievement demonstrates that the country has already covered more than three-fifths of that journey.
The 300-GW milestone therefore represents more than an increase in installed capacity. It reflects India's evolving energy strategy, in which clean power is increasingly linked with energy security, economic growth, domestic manufacturing and a more sustainable future.
With continued investment and faster development of renewable generation, transmission and storage infrastructure, India is positioning itself for a power system capable of supporting its expanding economy while steadily increasing the role of non-fossil energy.
