Chiara Bonini Receives DKMS Mechtild Harf Science Award for Innovation

Mumbai, APRIL 14, 2025: DKMS Stiftung Leben Spenden honored Professor Chiara Bonini, a pioneer in the clinical application of genetically modified T cells in stem cell transplantation, with the DKMS Mechtild Harf Science Award 2025. The award honors the outstanding achievements of internationally renowned physicians and scientists in the field of stem cell transplantation and cellular therapies.

“Professor Chiara Bonini’s groundbreaking findings in the field of personalized immunotherapy with genetically modified T cells have been essential in advancing the treatment of blood cancer. These discoveries have led to novel therapeutic approaches and hold the potential for translation into treatments for other types of cancer,” explains Professor Dr. Katharina Fleischhauer, member of the DKMS Medical Council and Head of the Institute for Cell Therapy Research at Essen University Hospital, in recognition of this year’s award winner. Chiara Bonini, MD, Professor of Hematology at the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele and Head of the Department of Experimental Hematology at the IRCSS San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Milan, accepted the award on March 31st, 2025, surrounded by physicians and esteemed guests from around the world, at the annual conference of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) in Florence, Italy. At the ceremony, the highly coveted DKMS John Hansen Research Grant was awarded and the DKMS Special Grant was also allocated for the first time.

“Chiara Bonini is one of the highly renowned scientists worldwide in the field of cell and gene therapy to treat cancer. She has been a leader in the clinical use of genetically modified T cells in stem cell transplantation, laying the foundation for innovative, life-saving therapies” said Professor Dr. Fleischhauer at the presentation of the DKMS Mechtild Harf Science Award, which comes with 10,000 Euro (approximately 9.26 Lakh INR). “Her work contributed to the development of the first EMA-approved genetically engineered cell-based medicinal product for cancer patients, paving the way for a new era of precision medicine and transformative treatments for patients worldwide.”

Award for pioneering personalized immunotherapy with genetically modified T cells

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) remains one of the most effective treatments for patients with hematologic malignancies and can also cure other blood disorders including inborn genetic diseases of the hematopoietic system. Despite its therapeutic potential, there is a risk of acute graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), a significant complication that contributes to both morbidity and mortality. To manage GvHD caused by allogeneic donor T cells, various T-cell-manipulation strategies have been explored. Early approaches focused on suicide gene therapy to balance graft-versus-leukemia effect (GVL) and immune reconstitution while controlling GvHD. Lately, genetic modifications, including tumor-specific T cell receptors (TCRs) or chimeric antigen receptors (CARs), have been introduced to enhance T cell antitumor efficacy.

Through more than 20 years of research in gene and cell therapy, Professor Bonini played a key role in the emergence of this field and advanced one of the first therapy projects applied to HSCT: the suicide gene therapy approach tends to eliminate alloreactive T cells in case of GvHD while preserving them in the absence thereof. Her team has since expanded into the field of cancer immunotherapy, refining TCR and CAR gene transfer techniques. One of Bonini’s major breakthroughs is TCR gene editing, which permanently reprograms T cells for enhanced precision and persistence in targeting cancer cells. By selecting tumor-specific antigens and engineering T cells to express optimal tumor-targeting receptors, her work has transformed T cell therapies into living drugs, designed to seek and destroy cancer cells with high specificity. “We have the techniques and knowledge for gene editing. The next challenge is identifying the right combinations of TCR and tumor specific antigen that will lead to the most effective therapies,” Bonini explains. Through further research, Bonini and her team were able to transfer this knowledge also to solid tumors: “Our aim is to create a TCR approach that could be utilized to generate TCR-edited cell products for a variety of cancer types. Since progress in cell therapies for solid tumors has been slower, this could be a game changer in this field,” says Bonini, who also serves on the executive committees of various scientific societies of cell and gene therapy, hematology and stem cell transplantation including ASGCT, ESGCT, EHA and EBMT.

On top: Research grants support next-generation scientists

During the ceremony, four outstanding fellows were also announced as the recipients of the DKMS John Hansen Research Grant 2025 Gabriele Casirati, MD, PhD (Boston Children’s Hospital, Boston, USA), Susan E. De Wolf, MD (Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, USA), Stephen Persaud, MD, PhD (Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, USA), and Abdur Rehman, PhD (The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, USA).

Their research spans key areas such as T cell and leukemic blast interactions in the regulation of GVL, association of gut microbiome and CAR-T outcomes, and next-generation conditioning regimes with reduced toxicity for HSCT. “Supporting young medical and scientific talents in blood cancer research is an investment in the advancement of medicine,” emphasized Professor Dr. Marcel van den Brink, Chair of the DKMS Medical Council.

For the first time, DKMS also awarded the DKMS Special Grant, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to improve cancer care worldwide. Dr. Brigid McMillan, MBChB (Stellenbosch University, Stellenbosch, South Africa) committed herself to investigating and describing barriers to specialized hematological care in Southern Africa. This grant aims to support her research on improving cancer care in South Africa.

Unshakable Faith: Discovering Shri Krishna’s Call

By:Dr. Shri Krishna Kinkar Ji, Shri Krishna Charit Manas (Bhagavat) Kathavachak and Spiritual Orator

Unshakable faith – this is the essence of Lord Hanuman’s devotion and the heart of Shri Krishna’s call to surrender, as reflected in Shri Krishna Charit Manas (Rasayan Mahakavya) by Jagadguru Shri Priyadarshi Ji Maharaj. In both of their lives, we find a powerful lesson: true surrender to the divine is not about weakness but about strength rooted in love and trust.

According to Dr. Shri Krishna Kinkarji Maharaj, “In Shri Krishna Charit Manas, Shri Krishna beckons us to let go of the ego and surrender completely to the divine will. His teaching calls for devotion, selflessness, and release of the need to control. One of the key teachings of the Manas is to form a relationship with Shri Krishna. Manas further explains, that there are 5 Bhaavs(emotions) through which we can connect with Shri Radha Krishna. One of them is ‘Daas Bhaav’. In which the devotee forever remains in His service as a ‘dass’ (servant). Hanuman ji is devoted to Bhagwan Shri Ram with this bhaav and it exemplifies this surrender. His life is not one of doubting, but of profound, unshakeable faith in the divine. Each action is a demonstration of this – he neither asks for praise nor reward; his only goal is to serve with a heart pure and open.

Hanuman’s story is a vivid portrayal of active faith – it moves mountains and crosses oceans, driven by boundless love. It is a reminder that surrender does not mean inaction or passivity. Just as Shri Krishna’s teachings ask us to act without attachment, Hanuman’s deeds show us how to act with courage, knowing that every step taken in faith brings us closer to the divine.

When we embrace surrender like Hanuman did, with an open heart and unshakable faith, we find peace, purpose, and strength in our journey. We begin to let go of fear, trust in the divine plan, and live with devotion, just as Hanuman lived, a life led by love and faith in the higher power.”

Saudi Arabia and Indonesia Deepen Economic Partnership Ahead of Ministerial Visit

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, April 11, 2025: His Excellency Bandar Al-Khorayef, Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources in Saudi Arabia, is currently preparing to visit Indonesia and all eyes are on the flourishing relationship between the two nations.

Saudi Arabia has long recognized Indonesia as a key partner in Southeast Asia, and the upcoming visit by a high-level delegation led by His Excellency Bandar AlKhorayef is expected to further cement cooperation in industry &  mining sectors. Indonesia is a key trading partner for Saudi Arabia with bilateral trade reaching more than USD 6 billion in 2023.

: His Excellency Bandar Al-Khorayef, Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources in Saudi Arabia,

The visit underscores the growing strategic and economic cooperation between the two nations, particularly in the areas of mining and key strategic industrial sectors including pharmaceuticals, food industry, and automotive.

Indonesia has emerged as a vital economic and geopolitical partner for Saudi Arabia in Southeast Asia. In 2023, bilateral trade between the two countries exceeded USD6 billion, reflecting a strong foundation of mutual interest and an eagerness to deepen engagement across several high-growth sectors.

A major focal point of the upcoming visit will be the strengthening of Saudi-Indonesia collaboration in the mining sector. With Indonesia’s mineral fuel exports valued at USD67 billion and imports reaching USD38 billion in the last fiscal year, the sector offers expansive opportunities for long-term growth.

During the visit, His Excellency will meet with several key officials from the public sector including his counterparts, Indonesia’s Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources, and Minister of Industry of Indonesia. His Excellency will also converse with members of the private sector, including the Director and CEO of PT Vale Febriany Eddy and CEO of BioPharma, Shaqiq Akasya.

Saudi Arabia has already made strategic investments in the country through its private sector, including its stake in Vale Indonesia, a subsidiary of the global mining giant Vale. This partnership highlights the Kingdom’s interest in expanding its footprint in Indonesia’s mining landscape, while supporting the sustainable development of one of the world’s most resource-rich regions.

Vale Indonesia is among the top producers of nickel – an essential component in electric vehicle (EV) batteries. Saudi Arabia which is investing heavily in renewable energy and EV technologies as part of its Vision 2030 agenda, could view collaboration in this area as a gateway to securing critical resources for its clean energy transition. As global demand for EVs continues to rise, Saudi Arabia’s investment will help unlock further exploration processing and infrastructure development in Indonesia’s mining sector.

In 2024, Indonesia’s global exports reached USD217 billion, a 1.3% year-on-year increase. Indonesia also has a target of reaching USD405 billion in global exports by 2029.

Saudi Arabia has played a key role in this trajectory, importing more than USD2 billion in goods from Indonesia in 2023, while exporting USD4 billion worth of products to the country.

A notable example of Indonesia’s growing contribution in Saudi Arabia’s food industry is the presence of Indofood, one of Indonesia’s largest consumer goods companies, which has expanded its operations in the Kingdom. Indofood’s instant noodles first emerged on the Saudi market in 1986 and are now widely distributed across Saudi Arabia.

Worthmentioning, the Jeddah Food Cluster, the largest food cluster in the world, represents a key area for potential collaboration. The cluster is positioned as a regional hub for halal food production and distribution, aligning closely with Indonesia’s position as the world’s largest halal market. The Jeddah Food cluster is also strategically located near Saudi Arabia’s key ports that facilitate exports across continents such as Africa, Europe and Asia.

In December 2023, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in halal product assurance and mutual recognition of halal certifications. The agreement aims to harmonize standards and streamline certification processes, reducing trade friction and opening news avenues for Indonesian halal producers to access the Saudi and wider GCC markets.

The visit of His Excellency Bandar Al-Khorayef, marks a new chapter in this relationship, with a focus on innovation, sustainable development and joint ventures in high-impact sectors. Beyond mining and food production, discussions are expected to include renewable energy, infrastructure and the sharing of industrial expertise.

Both countries are committed to leveraging their partnership to create long-term value, not only for their domestic economies but also for regional and global markets. Through increased trade, strategic investment and halal sector collaboration, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia are setting the stage of a future of share prosperity and mutual growth.
