World Bank Expands Private Sector Investment Lab for Job Creation

Apr. 24, 2025— The World Bank Group today announced the launch of the next phase of its Private Sector Investment Lab, focused on implementing proven solutions at scale. This new chapter also expands the Lab’s membership to include industry leaders with experience generating jobs in developing economies, aligning directly with the Bank’s sharpened focus on job creation as a core driver of development.

“With the expanded membership, we are mainstreaming this work across our operations and tying it directly to the jobs agenda that is driving our strategy,” said World Bank Group President Ajay Banga. This isn’t about altruism—it’s about helping the private sector see a path to investments that will deliver returns, and lift people and economies alike. It’s central to our mandate.”

Over the last 18 months, the Lab brought together leaders from global financial institutions to identify the most pressing barriers to private sector investment in developing countries—and to test actionable solutions.

That work has now been consolidated into five priority focus areas that are being integrated across Bank Group operations:

• Regulatory and Policy Certainty: Supporting governments in creating stable regulatory frameworks. For instance, the effort to connect 300 million people in Africa to electricity relies on upfront policy clarity to attract long-term capital.

• Political Risk Insurance: Streamlined guarantee instruments has led to a 30% increase in issuance compared to last year—enhancing investor confidence and helping the Bank meet its goal of tripling the use of guarantees by 2030.

• Foreign Exchange Risk: Scaling local currency financing to deepen domestic capital markets. Last year, IFC committed one-third of its long-term financing in local currency—with a goal of reaching 40% by 2030.

• Junior Equity Capital: Launched the Frontier Opportunities Fund to absorb earlystage risk. Initially capitalized with IFC income, the fund will grow with donor and philanthropic contributions.

• Securitization: Collaborating with institutions such as S&P and BlackRock to standardize and securitize portfolios, unlocking capital from pension funds, insurers, and sovereign wealth funds.

As the Lab enters its implementation phase, it is also expanding its membership to include private sector leaders in sectors critical to job creation—such as infrastructure and energy,agribusiness, healthcare, tourism, and manufacturing. These industries have a proven ability to translate investment into broad-based employment and economic opportunity.

Tenable Uncovers Privilege Escalation Flaw in Google Cloud

New Delhi, April 23, 2025 – Tenable, the cloud exposure management company, has uncovered a privilege escalation vulnerability in Google Cloud Composer (GCP) named ConfusedComposer. The vulnerability lets attackers with edit permissions in Cloud Composer to escalate privileges and gain access to a high-level service account with broad permissions across GCP.

Cloud Composer uses Cloud Build, a fully managed continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) service in GCP, to install custom PyPI packages, using a highly privileged default Cloud Build service account. According to the Tenable Research findings, attackers with edit permissions in Cloud Composer environments could exploit this process by injecting a malicious package, allowing them to escalate privileges and gain control over Cloud Build’s service account. This would grant access to critical GCP resources such as Cloud Build itself, Cloud Storage and Artifact Registry, demonstrating the risks of inherited cloud permissions.

ConfusedComposer is a variant of a vulnerability discovered by Tenable that was dubbed ConfusedFunction, it highlights the complexity and similarity of cloud services that eventually led to an exploitation variant.

ConfusedComposer highlights a broader security concern identified by Tenable as Jenga® Concept, the tendency for cloud providers to build services on top of one another, enabling security risks and weaknesses in one layer cascade into other services.

“When you play the Jenga® game, removing one block can make the whole tower unstable,” said Liv Matan, Senior Security Researcher at Tenable. “Cloud services work the same way. If one layer has risky default settings, then that risk can spread to others, making security breaches more likely to happen.”

Potential Impact of ConfusedComposer Exploitation:

If exploited, ConfusedComposer could allow attackers to:

  • Steal sensitive data from GCP services
  • Inject malicious code into CI/CD pipelines
  • Maintain persistent access through backdoors
  • Escalate privileges to potentially take full control of a victim’s GCP project

Google has addressed ConfusedComposer and no additional action is required.

Recommendations for Security Teams

While no user action is required to mitigate ConfusedComposer, Tenable recommends organizations to:

  • Follow the least privilege model to prevent unnecessary permission inheritance.
  • Map hidden dependencies between cloud services using tools like Jenganizer. 
  • Regularly review logs to detect suspicious access patterns.

“The discovery of ConfusedComposer highlights the need for security teams to uncover hidden cloud interactions and enforce strict privilege controls. As cloud environments become more complex, it’s crucial to identify and address risks before attackers take advantage of them,” added Matan.

This discovery serves as a wake-up call for security teams.

24th April 2025: Aadyam Theatre, the one-of-a-kind live storytelling initiative by Aditya Birla Group, has forged a new path for the theatre tradition in India. For its seventh season, Aadyam Theatre brings alluring tales from the pages of classics and original multi-genre plays, with some renowned personalities from the theatre world helming them. Nadir Khan returns to the director’s chair with Mumbai Star, while also curating Aadyam‘s seventh season. Following the grand success of the Aadyam musical Sing India Sing, he now brings another riveting musical drama to the stage—Mumbai Star, an underdog spectacle. Originally written by Devika Shahani, the script has been reimagined with a fresh perspective by long-time Aadyam collaborators Akarsh Khurana and Arghya Lahiri, promising a theatrical experience like no other.

Composed by Dhruv Ghanekar, the musical extravaganza is a saga of an aspiring actor told through song and movement with vivid imagery and meticulously choreographed dance acts. It is a musically rich composition of eight songs and 11 instrumental pieces by the musical genius. Mumbai Star boasts a stellar cast of actors, which includes Avenav Mukherjee as Dev, Abhishek Choksi as Tilak, Arushi Nigam as Koel, and Jayesh Sarange as Adi. Srishti Shrivastava as Laya, along with veteran actor Rajit Kapur as the mentor, are additions to the cast. The supporting cast is a troop of incredible artists like Eden Dolreich Pereira, Jimit Thaker, Melitta D’Souza, Navin Kelamane, Nikhil Thamke, Paridhi Somani, Sonakshi Amitabh, Sruti Vasudevan, Surabhi Andrare, Veronica Jose, and Vinay Bankar.

The visionary behind the choreography of these dance acts is Avantika Bahl, joined by Vivaran Dhasmana, who is choreographing the hip hop sets, and Krutika Mehta, who is overseeing the Bollywood choreography. The Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee, Uma Dogra, is behind curating the enchanting Kathak numbers. Mumbai Star brings together celebrated Indian and Western dance forms, including kathak, bharatnatyam, hip-hop, contemporary, and others. 

Talking about envisioning the world of Mumbai Star on paper, Devika Shahani said, Mumbai Star is very close to my heart. It is a universal story about one of the most important relationships of our lives—the guru and shishya. The seed of this subject germinated from my determination to present the dynamic between mentor and disciple through music and dance. Aadyam is taking a new and bold step in this different storytelling form. I am grateful to be able to tell this story, my third production with Aadyam, and an ode to my mentor, on this beautiful stage!”

With growth there has been a surge in challenges too. Fraudulent activities across social media, ecommerce, enterprise, and fintech platforms have significantly increased in the last few years in the country. A recent PwC India report revealed startling statistic of 57% incidents that are linked to these platform frauds. This fraud manifests in various forms driven by a small set of bad actors across the system:

  • Seller-Related Challenges: Certain sellers may engage in deceptive practices on marketplace. These include shipping damaged items, or offering counterfeit merchandise. Such practices impact customer trust and marketplace integrity.

  • Secured Packaging: Tamper-evident bags and Security Seals have unique package IDs. Amazon packs your items securely using these packaging solutions. The package ID is an alpha-numeric code that helps you to identify your order. If customers suspect tampering which is identifiable through the signs these packages display, they can reject a package at the time of delivery.
  • Open Box Delivery: With Open Box Inspection, the delivery associates unpack customers’ ordered packages at the time of delivery for their inspection. They can verify the order to ensure the right products are delivered without any damages and have the required accessories enclosed.
  • AI-Powered Vigilance: Advanced machine learning algorithms analyse system-wide data to detect suspicious patterns and identify potential fraudulent activities and prevent them.
  • 24/7 Customer Support: With above controls, while the instances of such abuse and fraud have been drastically controlled, in exception cases if any customer faces such a situation, a dedicated team of customer service agents stands ready to assist, ensuring their shopping experience remains positive.

Your Role in the Fight Against Fraud

The customers  have an equally crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the e-commerce marketplaces. Here’s how you can contribute:

  • Verify OTPs in person: Customers who have placed orders must receive their packages from the delivery associates themselves in person or have it collected through someone they trust. Also important to note is that OTPs should not be shared with unknown people or over the phone.
  • Inspect packages for tampering: Once received, the package must be inspected for any issues with the packaging on the outside and a tampered parcel should be returned immediately at the time of delivery.
  • Ensure proper pickup procedures during returns: For a successful return pickup, ensure the items and all accessories are returned in their original condition, including the brand and manufacturer box. The MRP tag should remain intact and the user manual, warranty cards and all the other documents provided with the item must be returned.
  • Be wary of impersonators: Never share sensitive information and always verify the authenticity of offers by logging into your account on the official Amazon app or website only. Customers who use emails should look for the Amazon smile logo icon in their inbox when receiving an email from Amazon. This alertness can protect your personal and financial information.
